Definition of Phalloplasty (Penis Enlargement)

Phalloplasty is a surgical procedure commonly performed for cosmetic reasons to enlarge the penis.

Procedure Overview

Phalloplasty surgery lasts from 1 to 3 hours and various techniques are used to:

  • Lengthen the penis
  • Increase the girth (width) of the penile shaft
  • Increase the size of the penis head (glans)

Lengthening

The penis can be lengthened about 1 to 2 inches when a surgeon divides the hidden ligaments suspending the penis from the underside of the pubic bone.

With the lengthening techniques employed by surgeons today, many patients still have to wear a penis traction (stretching) device post-surgery for more permanent gains in length.

Widening

The penile shaft can be widened by 30% to 50% in a flacid state. The flare of the penis head can be increased on average 15% to 20%.

Several techniques are available to widen the penile shaft, including injecting fat or by stacking and folding skin tissue grafts under the skin of the penis. Skin tissue grafts are also used for increasing the flare of the penis head.

Surgery Candidates

The decision to undergo a cosmetic surgical procedure is a personal choice, however men who commonly seek penile enlargement are men who:

  • Truly have a small penis
  • Are extremely self-conscious and typically uncomfortable exposing their penis in a public locker or shower room
  • Have received negative comments from their sexual partners
  • Feel a larger penis would enhance their desirability and sexual performance
  • May expose their body for a living, like actors, models, dancers, strippers, weight lifters, and competitive body builders
