I had such high hopes for the newly launched men’s shapewear line launched by Sara Blakely and her team at Spanx. Talk about a disappointment…
A few weeks ago I purchased a Cotton Compression Tank from Spanx for $55 (pictured at right). After 2-days of wear, I sent it back.
The Spanx for Men packaging was nicely done, and I loved the quality and durability of the fabric. Unfortunately, package design won’t make me thin, and no matter how great the fabrics are, if they aren’t fashioned correctly, the product will not maximize its effective capability.
So, here’s how I believe this product fails:
- The garment is not long enough–it rides-up. I have to constantly pull it down to reposition. A well-made compression garment is longer, using my bottom almost as an anchor.
- Contrary to what Spanx says, the garment will leave bulk under your clothes from riding-up. Unfortunately, that bulk will accumulate around your mid-section. Huge fail!
- The shoulder straps on the tank are too thin; men will be inclined to pull the garment down to keep it from riding-up. Pulling on thin straps cuts my shoulders.
- There appears to be no real understanding of the male physiologically in the design, cut, and shape of this garment; it’s a compression tube and that’s about it. A well-made compression garment is intimately familiar with the male physique; it gives where it needs, hugs where it needs to, and breaths where it needs to.
The notion of wearing shapewear is still new to men; this is still primarily a woman’s market, so men don’t want to be immasculated as they learn about and buy these products. As a result, I think Spanx may need to rethink a couple critical areas of its marketing strategy…
- Men don’t want to shop on a sultry, red website with an avatar of Sara shaking her hips.
- Men don’t want to receive packages addressed to them with the words SPANX in big black letters.
And know what makes Equmen’s line of compression garments superior? All of the issues I’ve addressed above are non-existent with the Equmen product line; they have thoughtfully and carefully designed every detail of their compression garments. An amazing product that effectively reshapes the male figure and image.
